House Lizards

low

Gekkonidae

Active Seasons:Summer, Monsoon

Behavior & Habits

House lizards, typically common wall geckos, are nocturnal reptiles that are insectivorous (feed on insects). Their most notable behaviour is their ability to climb smooth vertical surfaces and ceilings due to specialized adhesive lamellae on their feet. They are generally harmless to humans, and in fact, they help by preying on mosquitoes, flies, and smaller insects. They are attracted to lights because insects congregate there. They communicate through soft clicking or chirping sounds, especially during mating or territorial disputes.

Habitat & Signs

House lizards seek out areas that provide shelter, warmth, and access to insects. Indoors, they are commonly found on walls and ceilings, near light fixtures (where their prey gathers), and in dark, secluded spots like behind picture frames, wall hangings, wardrobes, and electrical boxes. They enter homes through tiny gaps, cracks around windows and doors, utility entry points, and open ventilation systems. Outdoors, they hide under loose bark, rocks, and in wall crevices during the day.

Prevention & Control

  • Seal Entry Points: Block all potential entry points by sealing cracks and gaps in walls, foundations, and around utility lines. Ensure doors and windows are properly sealed and screens are intact.
  • Control Other Pests: Since lizards enter homes in search of food (insects), reducing the population of other pests like flies, mosquitoes, and spiders will naturally make your home less attractive to them.
  • Remove Harborage: Eliminate external harborage sites near the house, such as excessive leaf litter, woodpiles, and debris. Indoors, reduce clutter, especially paper piles and boxes, which they may hide behind.
  • Limit Light Attraction: Use yellow or sodium vapor outdoor lighting, which is less attractive to the insects that the lizards feed on. Do not leave unnecessary lights on overnight near entry points.
