Behavior & Habits

Bed bugs are small, nocturnal parasitic insects that feed exclusively on the blood of humans and warm-blooded animals. Their feeding activity usually occurs between midnight and 5 a.m., but they will feed at any time if they are hungry and the host is still. They are attracted to carbon dioxide and body heat. Bed bug bites often appear as red, itchy welts, frequently in a line or cluster ("breakfast, lunch, and dinner"). They do not fly or jump but can crawl quickly. They are experts at hiding and will spend most of their lives concealed in tight crevices near the host.

Habitat & Signs

Bed bugs are classic "hitchhikers" and are often introduced into a new location via infested luggage, used furniture, clothing, or other personal belongings. Their primary habitat is within a few feet of where a human sleeps or rests. This includes mattresses (especially seams and tufts), bed frames, box springs, headboards, and bedside furniture. As an infestation grows, they spread to cracks in walls, electrical outlets, behind peeling wallpaper, under carpets, and inside electronics. They leave behind tell-tale signs: tiny reddish-brown fecal spots, shed skins (exuviae), and sometimes, a sweet, musty odor.

Prevention & Control

  • Inspect Travel Items: After traveling, thoroughly inspect all luggage, clothing, and travel bags before bringing them indoors. Wash all clothes in hot water and dry them on the highest heat setting possible.
  • Be Careful with Used Items: Scrupulously inspect any second-hand furniture (especially mattresses and upholstered items) for signs of bed bugs before purchasing or accepting them.
  • Regular Cleaning: Vacuum mattresses, bed frames, and surrounding areas frequently, paying close attention to seams and crevices. Immediately dispose of the vacuum bag outdoors in a sealed container.
  • Encase Mattresses: Use high-quality, zippered, bed bug-proof mattress and box spring encasements to trap any existing bugs and simplify future inspections.
